Marco Anthony

The design (BTS)

Background: With the Mountain West tournament happening this past weekend and Marco Anthony being named to the conference all-defensive team, I wanted to create a design to feature on our Statesman social media.

Contrast: The main contrast was created through the color palette. I used the white of the uniform to contrast off the darker navy blue background.

Alignment: The number (44) and his name are aligned on the top left and bottom right of the border.

Proximity: Anthony is aligned in the middle for the main image and in a box with a border, the image on the left is aligned with the top and left third lines.

Repetition: All of the colors from his uniform are repeated throughout. Also, a border was created around the middle box by repeating the state abbreviations TX-VA-UT, which was his path to get to Utah State.

Color Scheme: Navy blue, white and grey.

Font Choice: I used two fonts — his name in a spraypaint-like script and the number and state text in one of my favorite active fonts.

Photoshop: The main tools I used are listed below.

  • Texture layering

  • Type tool

  • Subject select, quick selection and layer masking

  • Black and white adjustment layer

  • Adobe Camera Raw

  • Brightness and contrast adjustment layer

  • Pen tool

  • Rectangle tool

  • Clipping mask

  • Stroke and effects

This design started by cutting out Anthony in both images using select subject, quick select and layer masking. I isolated Anthony in the main image with a layer mask and turned the background black and white. Then, I put his photo through camera raw to make the image a little more vibrant, I also adjusted him slightly with brightness and contrast adjustment layers. After that, I picked a background color, which I pulled from his uniform, and layered that with some textures I have. I settled on this one because I really liked how setting a different blending mode turned a dusty texture into almost a basketball-like texture, which I thought worked perfect for this design. I then worked on the border by creating a path with the pen tool and typing on top of that. Next came the white border, which is just a rectangle with no fill and a white stroke. Finally, I put the main image in a clipping mask of the rectangle and aligned the text and images.
