Haircare Advert

Design process

Contrast: A lot of the contrast in this design comes from the white, black and gray tones. The model in this design contrasts with the gray background with the black t-shirt. The pomade product is also black and contrasts off the background in a similar way as the model.

Design elements: I wanted to explain some of the choices I made and why they tied in well with the overall theme and branding of this design. The choice of text was inspired by a lot of similar products like boots, clothing, whiskey and other male-centered brands that share similar styles. Something that would most likely appeal to the model in the design, which is why that model was chosen — to reflect the branding of the product itself.

Colors: The black and white and gray tones are all pulled from the product in this design. In addition, the text effects share a similar golden-beige kind of color as in the pomade branding.

Proximity: There are four main elements in the design that needed careful consideration for placement. The model was placed mostly on the right-third line with the eyes close to the top third, the proportions fill up most of the design. The text and pomade are stacked near the top left of the design, in line with the top of the model's head.

Photoshop: The main tools I used are listed below.

  • Texture layering

  • Gaussian blur

  • Gradient tool

  • Type tool

  • Select subject

  • Object selection tool

  • Text effects- drop shadow, outer glow and stroke.

Revisions: The main changes came with the alignment of some of the elements of the design, and obviously, swapping the model. One of the main recommendations I received from my peers was that the original cutout wasn't high enough quality and that the hair wasn't displayed enough for the branding of this advert. So, after trying to adjust the original image, I decided to look for a replacement and I found this one. It not only has a higher resolution, but it shows off the hair better which works well for a men's pomade.
