USMNT "the mirror" design

Design process

Background: The inspiration for this design was Pulisic's game-winning goal against Mexico in the November World Cup qualifier. The text "The man in the mirror" derives from a comment that Mexico goalkeeper Memo Ochoa made about the USMNT looking at Mexico as the example, or looking in the mirror.

Process: After creating the patters (outlined below), I used select subject and quick masking to create a clean cutout of Pulisic. After I had the cutout, I duplicated the image and used the background of the original image as a soft background to lay the pattern on top of. To make the two images blend together, I used blending options sliders until the pattern started to pop out, but not cover the background entirely.

Colors: The colors that were created for the patterns were all pulled from the USMNT crest — navy blue, red and white. The idea of this project was to create a pattern from the crest to use in a design to celebrate the USMNT's victory against Mexico in World Cup qualifying.

Contrast: The contrast comes from the white negative space and the red and navy blue colors. Although not technically complimentary colors, the red and navy blue naturally contrast with each other as well.

Proximity: I wanted the shapes on these patterns to be fairly close together, without taking out all the negative space. All of the patterns are scaled to medium size and the shapes are prominent across the design.

Process: To create these patterns, I took the brush sample shown below (which was just three brush strokes combined) and used the feature "create from image". This gives you the option to create a pattern from that image and I decided to create three from this process because they were all so different. By using the scale and rotation sliders within the pattern creation menu, I settled on these three patterns.
