Snowfall graphics

Purpose: These graphics were created for a newscast weather segment for one of my other classes. The intention is to show the snow totals for some of the ski resorts close to Logan — the graphics were accompanied by live video of the mountains.

Repetition: Because the graphics were made for a Utah State newscast, the text color is pulled from Utah State's color codes. Both of these graphics use the same photo as a background, with some gaussian blur applied to the image.

In addition to the text color, the text needed more separation from the background so a white rectangle was added, with its opacity lowered.

Photoshop: The main tools I used are listed below.

  • Rectangle tool

  • Layer effects panel

  • Pattern creation panel

  • Type tool

  • Gaussian blur

  • Camera raw filter

  • Texture layering

Font: Myriad Pro, condensed bold.

Logo source: All logos were pulled from the resort's website.

Revisions: There were some very helpful suggestions from my peers on this design to make it more professional and concise. The main recommendation was to columnize the totals on the SLC graphic to make the design feel less cluttered and more organized. It was also suggested to make the mountain name text bigger and drop the "mountain or resort" text. By doing this, it is easier and quicker for the viewer to recognize the useful information.
