Ἀσπάσασθε Ῥοῦφον, τὸν ἐκλεκτὸν ἐν Κυρίῳ, καὶ τὴν μητέρα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐμοῦ.
Greet Rufus, elect in the Lord and his mother and mine.
Paraphrase: Give my love to Rufus and his mother. Eve since He became one with Jesus, He has been an eminent and beautiful Christian. His mother is so dear to me. When I think of all she did for me in my time of need, I am led to think of her as my own mother. God bless her for all she was and is to me.
Comments:
ἐκλεκτὸν is usually used to refer to one's being elect and chosen by God. Here the meaning is more likely that of a choice, an outstanding, or eminent person. Alford denies this and says that ἐκλεκτόν is not "to be softened" to this meaning. He says that Paul never uses the word this way and that the real meaning here is "elect, i.e. one of the elect of the Lord." source Gifford writes: "The title seems to be added as expressing some special excellence, and not simply that Divine election which is common to all Christians." source He points to 1Pet 2:4 as a parallel. cf also Sanday & Headlam
