2018 Best of Colorado Winners

2018 Best of Colorado Overall Winner

Cosplayer: BlondeGirl_Cosplay

Character: Hela

Photographer: Mike Barry

Description:

This Hela Cosplay was made using Brevely’s method from DownCreative Studio. This is the second suit made for comfort reasons. It took a total of two months to make the suit and the headdress. The body suit is made of black mesh fabric. To make the details I spent a week constructing mold boxes and another week creating the molds with Dragon Skin silicone and Smooth Cast 300 from Smooth on. Then the details were made with Silcone, castmagic powders and a touch of metallic fabric paint. I also lightly brushed the molds with pearly green cast magic powder to give the details a shine. To attach the details I used sil-poxy. The helmet is made of up layers of 6mm EVA foam and 4mm Eva foam with Worbla on the inside for support and between layers of horns. I also added 3 layers of epsilon pro for protection. Quick note: The swords were made by @PowerLoaderProps and are the only part of the cosplay that was not made by me.

Cosplayer: Altered Shadows Cosplay

Character: Diablo Lord of Terror

Photographer: Lindsey Heilmann

Description: This 2018 Diablo Lord of Terror is a complete rebuild of my 2017 blocky version, recreated to make a more organic look, provide more custom comfort, and also be a more "handler-friendly" costume. There are numerous materials within: It is primarily EVA foam, bits of Worbla, upholstery foam, PVC pipe, wood and metal hardware on the stilts, magnets, all handpainted with liquid latex mixed with acrylic paint, a pool noodle tail, gel lighting and packing material to help disburse, flickering EL wire in the belly, laser lights into the eyes, and yarn to make the blood veins on legs and arms. The entire process started in July of 2017, but I pushed hard on from mid-June 2018 to first week of September to complete it. I had a lot of fun making this project and I'm proud of it! I think I hit the mark with how I wanted it to look. Organic and yet intimidating.

2018 Best of Colorado Masters Winner

Cosplayer: Drizzy Designs

Character: Maleficent

Photographer: LensPaperScissors

Description: This Maleficent build has been one of my dream cosplay's ever since I saw the movie. Its complete with fully animatronic wings that extend up to 13 feet from tip to tip and hand sculpted horns. The frame of the wings is made of hand cut aluminum and each large feather was hand made. The wings are controlled by 2 linear actuators that are wired into a 2 radio circuit board. They open and close with the touch of a button from a keyfob. The feather "sleeves" are made of real goose feathers and turkey feathers. The horns where hand sculpted by me in NSP medium Chavant clay. I then molded them in silicone and cast them in resin. The dress is made from bed sheets that were hand dyed using tea and coffee and then weathered with and airbrush.

2018 Best of Colorado Props Winner

Maker: Serval Opus

Prop: Horizon Zero Dawn Bird

Description: The wings themselves are actually 25” each from mid back. The tail piece is also 25”: it is separate and attached at the back with a 1” parachute clip. The legs are made of 1”, heat bent, PVC pipe. The torso and wings are structured with 1” and ¼” wooden dowels, respectively. The wings are basic pulleys that are “opened” by pulling a leather strap on the bird’s back and securing it over a nail mid-spine. The head is a Styrofoam ball and the entire armature is covered in craft/EVA foam that was pieced together by tracing screenshots of the models on a monitor. The shoulder strap/mount is made of PVC and adjustable nylon strapping. A shoulder brace (with the game’s title sewn on) prevents the mount from slipping too close to the neck and provides comfort. There is an optional arm mount in case the shoulder mount becomes uncomfortable. It was painted with a base layer of white Rustoleum, with black, gold, and blue accents being in acrylic. Blue Cyberlox accents emulate the “Override” technique from in-game.
