About Us

Our Mission

"To enrich Colorado’s cosplay community by showcasing and recognizing its members’ hard work, providing and sharing educational content, and fostering an inclusive environment to share our passion for cosplay."

What is the Colorado Academy of Cosplay?

The Colorado Academy of Cosplay is a statewide community dedicated to cosplay and was created in response to the modeling, inequality, elitism, and body shaming which was becoming prevalent in the Colorado cosplay communities. Our group was founded in order to provide an opportunity for cosplayers to seek advice, resources, and show off their use of materials for cosplay in a safe and inclusive environment. We believe that no matter the age, gender, religion, ability, disability, size, sexual orientation, financial status, experience, etc.,

ANYONE CAN COSPLAY.

Colorado Academy of Cosplay members hail from all parts of our beautiful state and the organization is open to anyone who lives or spends a significant portion of their time in Colorado. We welcome all types of cosplayers from those who are curious about getting into cosplay to veteran cosplayers, and anything in between. Even cosplay photographers are welcome.

The CAC strives to provide an inclusive environment, supports the sharing of educational content, allows members to help each other with projects, inspires discussion of costume-related topics and encourages anyone to ask questions about the art. Additionally, in order to provide an outlet for our members to show off their creations, the CAC holds an annual statewide cosplay competition open to all members at any level. The CAC also does educational panels at local conventions.

What is Cosplay?

Cosplay is a term created in 1984 as a mashup between 'costume' and 'play.' Most consider cosplaying as dressing up as a character and attending conventions. For us, cosplay means community. It’s taking your interests and passions and making them come to life and expressing them in a physical manner through different mediums. It’s about meeting other people who have the same interests, inspiring others and being inspired by others. It gives meaning and purpose, a way for people to express themselves; an artistic outlet using a huge variety of materials from fabric and foam to casting and 3D printing. It brings friendship and, in some cases, love. Cosplay is a means to bring joy to children and adults of all ages and to provide charity to local hospitals and non-profit organizations. It is a way of life for thousands of Coloradans and a passion that for some means buying fabric instead of a meal, and to others, it has become their livelihood and source of income. Cosplay is so much more than just dressing up in costumes; it’s everything.
