A Life in Textiles and the Power of Making
For over 2 decades, I worked as a Senior Director at a fashion print agency, designing prints for international markets. It was a fast-paced, trend-driven world that sharpened my creative instincts and deepened my love for the rich, expressive language of textiles.
Later, I transitioned into education, taking on the role of Head of Textiles at a school in Kent. It was here that I discovered the joy of inspiring creativity in others. Since 2016, I’ve worked as a textile consultant with the Textile Skills Centre, developing and leading both online and in-person workshops for educators and creatives. Our courses span from Primary to A-Level, covering everything from fabric manipulation and surface decoration to pattern cutting and garment construction.
Throughout my career, one constant has remained: a deep commitment to creative exploration. When teaching, my colleague and I would set aside Saturday mornings for what we affectionately called “fun time” — a dedicated space to experiment with new techniques and develop our own skills. This wasn’t just about play; it directly enhanced our teaching. When teachers invest in their own creativity, students benefit tenfold.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my current role is creating exemplar samples for our courses. There’s something incredibly satisfying about the process — testing ideas, combining techniques, and refining outcomes. It’s where innovation and craftsmanship meet, and it’s a creative process I deeply value.
I continue to produce my own textile artworks, often inspired by the themes and methods explored in our workshops. These personal projects feed back into my teaching, creating a continuous loop of learning and inspiration.
More than just a subject, textiles offer a powerful space for wellbeing. The act of making — of using your hands, of expressing yourself non-verbally, is restorative. It reduces stress, boosts motivation, and improves focus and self-esteem.
This is why I believe every teacher — and everyone, really—should make time for a creative textile break. In an increasingly digital and fast-paced world, there is real power in slowing down and engaging with materials in a tactile, meaningful way.
Textiles connect us — to history, to culture, to one another, and to ourselves - and that, I believe, is something worth weaving into every day.
