Supporting the professionals who teach and train D&T teachers is critical if the subject is to thrive and this is where DTTEG (Design and Technology Teacher Education Group), plays a pivotal role.
DTTEG is made up of university-based and school-based teacher educators, involved in initial teacher education (ITE), continuing professional development (CPD), postgraduate study and mentoring, bringing together a rich blend of voices, experiences and expertise. It is a space built by and for the D&T community to be collaborative, reflective and forward-looking and committed to advancing D&T education across both primary and secondary settings.
DTTEG serves as an open forum for conversation and collaboration with teacher educators in the D&T community to share best practice in D&T teacher education. At its core, DTTEG exists to share practice, encourage diverse perspectives and promote professional learning. In a time when teacher recruitment, curriculum relevance and professional development is under increased pressure, the group aims to share expertise in helping shape national (and international) conversations about what high-quality D&T teacher education looks like.
This aim and scope reflects DTTEG’s belief that supporting D&T teachers’ development at every stage of their professional journey, from pre-service training to leadership, strengthens the quality and sustainability of D&T teaching in schools.
The DTTEG website is a forum for exchanging news, ideas and opinions about D&T teacher education. This includes, but is not limited to:
Teacher education programmes: school-based and university-based, undergraduate and postgraduate.
Subject knowledge enhancement.
Recruitment to teacher education programmes.
Responding to government policy that affects D&T teacher education.
Updates on programme developments.
Curriculum matters in teacher education.
Resources available for and to the D&T teacher education community.
Early career development.
DTTEG actively invites all voices of those involved in D&T teacher education through events and professional knowledge exchanges. One of the main ways the group welcomes contributions is through the DTTEG blog. The blog offers an opportunity for teacher educators to share their experience and expertise through short blog posts aimed at others involved in D&T teacher education, such as school-based initial teacher training and early career teacher mentors, subject leaders, university-based teacher educators and researchers and academics in the field. This blend of experiences and sharing from practitioners and academics enables a rich professional community of practice.
The group also runs an annual Symposium, bringing together in person, teacher educators, mentors and researchers for a day of collaboration, keynote talks and sharing of practice. The event aims to bridge theory and the realities of practice and strengthen professional networks. Through exchange, inspiration and collective reflection, we can build a strong D&T teacher education community that can evolve to meet the needs and challenges of a constantly changing education system.
If you are part of the D&T teacher education community, whether school-based or university-based, we would love to talk with you and share your experience. Find out more about the blog at dtteg.com
