The Interactive Digital Magazine from CLEAPSS
Welcome to the summer 2025 edition of Futureminds – a landmark issue, as it is our 30th
This is a special Art and Design addition, which we have pulled together to illustrate some of the differences, and similarities between the subjects of Art and Design and Design and Technology. At CLEAPSS we work with schools across all of these areas, and over recent years have also developed a close working relationship with the NSEAD and DATA, as the subject groups for these subjects.
With the curriculum and assessment review taking place, there has been lots of discussion about the relative merits of these curriculum areas, and we thought it may be useful to show some of the exciting things that are taking place in Art and Design. We have articles from Michele Gregson, the General Secretary of the NSEAD, Ged Gast and Dan China from the NSEAD, Sarah Crowther the Arty Teacher, Tim Thornton the ceramicist, Hannah Wiggins an expert teacher, Linda Harvey an expert textiles teacher and member of the Textiles Skills Centre with Nicky Simpson and Dawn Foxall.
Art and Design Special Edition
As this is our 30th edition, we also thought we could remind readers of what went in the first edition, which went live in spring 2016 with articles about:

New Guides
Over the past term we have published three new guides:
Checks in D&T, Food and Art and Design (GL095) which came about following a Helpline query and subsequent conversations about the types of checks that should be part of the standard regime of managing health and safety in these rooms. Checks in D&T, Food and Art and Design (GL095)
Sous Vide cooking (GL466) which also came about from a Helpline query. A school had purchased the equipment and wanted some help with putting together their risk assessment and working practices. Sous Vide cooking (GL466)
Dealing with vomit in D&T, food and Art and Design (GL467). We had a guide on blood spillage (Dealing with a blood spill in DT and Art; GL324), but we were asked about how a teacher or technician should deal with a rather unpleasant episode of someone being sick in their room. Dealing with vomit in D&T, food and Art + Design (GL467)
We have also made some minor amendments to the MRATs, any changes can be identified in the MRAT index: MRAT index
We continue to work on our AI materials and VR/XR activities, and will be publishing guidance on these in the next few months.
CLEAPSS Logins
One big piece of CLEAPSS work over the last term has been the switch over to individual logins for users of the websites. This took place on Monday 3rd February, a moment in CLEAPSS history!
CLEAPSS was braced for impact. Meetings were cancelled, extra staff were on hand, the deputy office manager brought in bread, cheese & ham to make emergency toasted sandwiches for exhausted colleagues reeling under the pressure of ‘phone calls from members who could no longer access the websites. We waited …… and waited ……. but nothing happened!
Yes, there were calls from members who needed help to sort out their logins but the number of enquiries was less than the same time the week before.
All of this warrants a really big Thank You to all of you who heeded the warnings, followed the advice and set up their login well in advance of the switch!
What is there still to do?
Obviously with a change this fundamental there are still things to do.
A number of schools only have a single individual login set up, possibly shared by the science technicians? We would encourage all staff across science, D&T and Art and Design to set up a login of their own. This will become increasingly important as the additional functionality of ‘My CLEAPSS’ is rolled out.
Some schools have tried to set up logins for pupils, but this is not allowed. CLEAPSS advice is a professional resource designed for use by teachers and technicians only. We ask that the list administrator check and remove any pupils that may have inadvertently been added. Failure to do this could result in the temporary suspension of the school’s account.
The role of list administrator and the default contact are important so it would be worth reviewing whether the right people have been allocated these.
For further information about individual logins see our guide Individual Login FAQs (GL460)
Creative Teachers, Inspired Students: The Power of Making Time
At the Textile Skills Centre, we believe creativity isn’t just a skill, it’s a lifeline. That’s why we actively promote wellbeing through textiles and encourage everyone, especially educators, to carve out time for their own creative practice.
As teachers, we’re often so focused on our students - planning, marking, mentoring - that our own creativity quietly takes a back seat. Days blur into weeks, and before we know it, the joy of making for ourselves gets lost.
But here’s the truth: the more we nurture our own creativity, the more we’re able to inspire it in others. When we take time to explore techniques, experiment with materials, and engage in hands-on textile work, we refill our own creative cup, and that spills over into our classrooms in the best possible way.
Textiles offer a unique opportunity for non-verbal expression and mindful making. Even a short creative break can lift your mood, reduce stress, and rekindle your passion for the subject. It’s not about perfection, it’s about presence.
So whether it’s 10 minutes of stitching, trying out a new technique, or just letting your imagination roam free, give yourself permission to play. Because when teachers are creatively empowered, students thrive too.
The following 2 articles from Nicky Simpson & Linda Harvey show how 2 textiles teachers make time for their own creativity.
