SEASON PREVIEW EDITION
Four Decades
Trio of Three-peats on Tap?
A trio of Three-peats, a return to the two-division format, and the addition of two new expansion teams are the top headlines as the United League enters its 40th season. Philadelphia welcomes its long-awaited expansion club—ending a nearly 40-year wait for the return of the major leagues—along with sunny Miami. The St. Louis Maroons will try to become the first three-time champions in over a decade, but they will face a stiff challenge in the reconstituted West Division, where the Los Angeles Outlaws are pegged to top the table. In the East, Toronto is the clear favorite to make a World Series return, ahead of Detroit and Washington.
Other than a third Maroons World Series crown, the other Three-peat quests are for Barry Bonds and Dwight Gooden, who could become three-time MVP and Cy Young winners, respectively. Craig Robinson is the only batter to win more than two MVPs in a row (and he got six). Bonds will have some competition this year, however, as Toronto's Ellis Burks and Havana's Kal Daniels are poised for monster years.
On the pitching side, only three players have won two Cy Youngs in a row: Gene Conley, Johnny Antonelli, and Larry Dierker. Gooden could also join Dieker as the only five-time Cy winners—at the tender age of 25. Other contenders for the Cy include Washington's Teddy Higuera and Montreal's Floyd Youmans. Oh, and three-time 19-game winner Bret Saberhagen.
Rookies to keep an eye on include Florida's #1 overall pick Frank Thomas, Detroit starter Randy Tomlin, Brooklyn second baseman Luis Alicea, and Cleveland first baseman Hal Morris.
The new divisional format will see nine teams in each division, with the top three advancing to the postseason and the pennant winners earning a bye into the Semi Series.
