PROJECT DESCRIPTION
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Vector Control Program in Ormoc City plays a crucial role in addressing the ongoing threat of dengue, a major public health concern in the Philippines. The country faces persistent dengue outbreaks, particularly during the wet season from June to February.
The Nationwide Aedes-Borne Viral Disease Prevention and Control Program, also known as the vector control program, aims to prevent vector breeding and curb the spread of vector-borne diseases. To effectively manage dengue-related morbidity, the program employs two key teams: the Fogging Team, responsible for containing surges in dengue cases, and the Vector Control Team, focused on sustainable environmental interventions.

The Nationwide Aedes-Borne Viral Disease Prevention and Control Program, which aims to reduce cases of Aedes-borne disease, have been central to the country's efforts to control dengue cases in particular. In Ormoc City, there have been 1,953 reported dengue cases from 2020 to January 2024, with the highest number of cases recorded in 2024, totaling 992 cases. in August 2024, the local government of Ormoc declared a a state of calamity due to the surge in dengue cases in the city.
To reduce dengue-related morbidity, the Environmental Health and Sanitation services (EHS) have established two teams: the Fogging Team, which focuses on environmental interventions, larval control, and larval surveys. These interventions include eliminating mosquito breeding sited, securing containers, and using insecticides. The Vector Control Team also conducts educational campaigns, distributes treated mosquito nets, and applies larvicidal granules to stagnant waters. For biological control, the team in collaboration with the City Agricultural Office and the Bureau of Fishieries, has released guppy fish into large areas of stagnant water. Additionally, the LGU Dengue Task Force deployed over 200 Job Order employees to various baranagays fo dengue response efforts.
The Vector Surveillance Team covered 13,860 households and conducted larvicidal applications in an estimated 12,620 homes. Additionally, 72 elementary schools, 17 secondary schools, and 9 integrated schools were monitored and provided with Olyset nets. These efforts have been effective in controlling the spread of dengue and protecting public health in Ormoc City. By December 2024, the state of calamity due to dengue was finally lifted.
The Vector Control Team employs various strategies, including reducing the source of dengue vectors through Search and Destroy, eliminating container habitats conducive to oviposition, and using larvicides to target mosquito larvae and pupae. Pupal surveys help identify productive containers for targeted treatment, enhancing efficiency. The team is also engaged in dengue prevention campaigns, distributing treated mosquito nets, larvicidal granules for stagnant waters, and conducting educational bench conferences to raise awareness about dengue dangers, the importance of eliminating breeding sites, and environmental sanitation. They also issue citation ticket for non-compliance.
