What do I need to know about scams and fraud?
If you have questions about a scam or financial fraud there are AARP ElderWatch volunteers who can help you. You can report suspected fraud, get personalized referrals and assistance and obtain information about consumer fraud issues and trends to 800-222-4444. In the AARP presentation at the RAO coffee social they listed the top 5 red flags of a phone scam:
Asking for your credit card, bank account or Social Security numbers
Caller is aggressive and/or pressures you to act quickly
Caller is offering you something that sounds “too good to be true”
You are asked to pay a “nominal” fee for shipping, handling, etc to get your “gift”
Caller says you have been “specially selected” for an offer
