Where can I find information on state and national cemeteries for veterans?
The Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) National Cemetery Administration maintains 153 national cemeteries in 42 states and Puerto Rico as well as 34 soldier's lots and monument sites. You should know there is not a VA national cemetery in every state. In addition, many states have established state veteran’s cemeteries. Eligibility for state cemeteries is similar to Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) national cemeteries but may also include residency requirements. Even though they may have been established or improved with Government funds through VA's Veterans Cemetery Grants Program, state veterans cemeteries are run solely by the states. For any questions regarding a specific cemetery, you should contact that cemetery.

You can also search for burial locations of veterans and their family members in VA National Cemeteries, state veterans’ cemeteries, various other military and Department of Interior cemeteries, and for veterans buried in private cemeteries when the grave is marked with a government grave marker. The website below can be used to conduct a search.

Veterans can fill out VA Form 40-10007, https://www.va.gov/vaforms/va/pdf/va40-10007.pdf, Application for Pre-Need Determination of Eligibility for Burial in a VA National Cemetery, and the VA will respond and certify eligibility. Doing this in advance will speed up processing at time of death and will be one less thing the next of kin need to deal with during this typically difficult time. A list of VA national cemeteries is available online at http://www.cem.va.gov/cem/cems/allnational.asp
