The Lesson

The year is 1978. Gasoline was 65 cents a gallon. Disco was thumping at the night clubs. Grease and the Buddy Holly Story were top movies. Imagine someone sitting behind a desk somewhere made a ruling that anyone smoking mother nature would been attested and charged with a criminal offence!

Didcha learn yer lesson?

The Lesson

Words & Music by Brent Lindsay Boehler © 1978 SOCAN

I was sitting in my car just the other night

I was looking at the stars such a pretty sight

When this long haired bearded fellow walks up to me

He said you look like you smoked one or two

And I got something I'd like to show to you

So come outta there and have youselves a look see

I said sorry friend don't want none

Cos I've seen what that stuff has done

And you ain't sellin' none of that shit to me

He said come on man why don't you try it

You going to like it so much I know you'll buy it

Tell you what I'll do is give you the very first toke for free

I sezz listen man Isays I don't I don't smoke

And I don't care if you got a free toke

I don't want none, can't you see

So he pulls out this little plastic bag

There's some stuff inside I ain't never tried

He puts it in the pipe and passes it over to me

So he lights a match and sticks it over the end

He says come on man ain't gonna do it again

If you want to smoke it you gotta be ready

So I took that pipe and pulled on hard

And all I could see was a mass of moving stars

And all I could say was Whoopee

I'll tell you man that was some pretty mean shit he was selling

there

I sezz how much do you sell that stuff for

He says 30 bucks maybe little bit more

But hows about 20 and a case of beers

I was handing him the money when I seen the lights

And the sirens screaming off to the right

And I said holy smokes I'm getting the hell out of here

I started my engine and said keep the cash

He said hey man don't forget the hash

You just bought with that brand new crisp twenty dollar bill

I left that spot like a man on fire

I was burning the hell out of my poor old tires

I was doing 90 coming off that hill

I had 'er floored in my 65 Fury

You can bet your life I was in a hurry

Passing cars like they were standing still

Somewhere there there's a lesson taught

Its illegal that stuff I just bought

And they say don't smoke it, but think I will
