God's perfect creation was ruined by sin way back in the beginning, but because of God's great love for His people, He made a way to rescue them. He promised Adam and Eve that a rescuer would come through their line and we have been tracing that promise from Adam and Eve to Noah, through Abraham, to Judah, through generations that eventually led to David and Solomon.
David and Solomon were known as the greatest earthly kings for God's people. Solomon was very wise, but he didn't always obey God. The consequence after he died for Solomon's disobedience, or sin, was that the kingdom would be divided.
The nation was divided into two kingdoms: Israel in the north and Judah in the south. David's family continued ruling in Judah while other tribes ruled in Israel.
God's people were now divided and they had many kings. Some kings followed God for a while. Some kings did not follow God at all. None of the kings followed God perfectly.
As the years went by, God's people forgot about Him. They disobeyed God and eventually, enemies came and made God's people leave their homes. This was called exile.
Even when God's people were far away. he was still faithful. Even when His people sinned, God still loved them. Even when things looked really bad, God was still keeping His promise. God never gives up on His people.
Even though the kings and people sinned, God didn't forget his promise to send a savior through the line of David. We see His faithfulness in this verse:
The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:22-23
Why do you think so many kings didn't follow God?
Practice Lamentations 3:22-23. Talk about a time when God was faithful.
Pray and ask God to Him to help you remember that He is faithful.
