Unmarked crosswalks exist at all intersections. It's important that there is at least twenty feet clear of vehicles, with no parking spaces, on the approach of any crosswalk, so that people driving can easily see people using or about to use the crosswalk. Clearing the approach to a crosswalk of vehicles and other obstacles to improve sight lines is called "daylighting."
On the south end of the North Main Street and Tuck Drive intersection the crosswalk is unmarked. Despite being unmarked this crosswalk is well used. Because this unmarked crosswalk is well used, it should be marked.
Based on the analysis below, Hanover Bike Walk recommends:
Daylight the unmarked crosswalk on the southern side of the North Main Street and Tuck Drive intersection by removing parking spaces that are within twenty feet of the southern side of the intersection
Mark the southern side of the North Main Street and Tuck Drive intersection, based on the high number of users of this unmarked crosswalk
A count by the Bike Walk Census Tool, designed by an ENGS 89 and 90 group, Wendell Wu, Andrei Gerashchenko, Jake P. Twarog, Raif T. Olson and Zachary T. Nelson-Marois, counted over 400 people traveling across North Main Street along the southern southern side of the North Main Street and Tuck Drive intersection in the unmarked crosswalk, and across Line 1 in the diagram below, during 4.75 hours midday on February 26th, 2024.*
*When these counts were taken, the Bike Walk Census Tool overcounted wheelchairs, mistaking people rolling bicycles or carts as people traveling in wheelchairs. This misclassification does not change the total count of those who navigated this intersection.
The Bike Walk Census Tool was set up on the southeast corner of the North Main Street and Tuck Drive intersection. Those crossing along the path in question - within the unmarked crosswalk on the southern side of the intersection across North Main, crossed Line 1. Those crossing along the diagonal marked crosswalk across North Main crossed Line 0. Some people crossing along the unmarked crosswalk on the north side of the intersection across North Main, also crossed Line 0. Those crossing Tuck drive along the marked crosswalk on the western side of the intersection crossed Line 2.
This diagram shows the paths taken by people crossing. Shortly after the beginning of the study period, a vehicle was parked in the parking spot on the southeast corner of the intersection, which explains why not many people traveled where that vehicle was parked.
