Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and Assessment
A. Review for Mastery
1. Based on the lesson about Outcome-based Education (OBE) and Assessment, explain the essence of OBE and OBTL..
o The essence of OBE (Outcome- Based Education) is to shift the focus from what is taught to what students are expected to learn. It aims to define clear learning outcomes or desired skills, knowledge, and attitudes that students should acquire. OBTL (Outcome-Based Teaching and Learning) is closely related to OBE but focuses on the teaching and learning processes. OBTL encourages educators to design learning experiences that engage students actively in achieving the desired learning outcomes.
2. Explain the meaning of constructive alignment in the context of the instructional cycle.
o Constructive alignment in the context of the instructional cycle shows how important the appropriate alignment is. Constructive alignment is an outcomes-based approach to teaching in which the learning outcomes that students are intended to achieve are defined before teaching takes place. Constructive Alignment supports positive academic outcomes for an increasingly diverse group of learners, because it makes teaching and learning goals and methods Aligned (well organized, consistent) and Explicit (obvious, visible).
3. Study the attached comic strips below and state common erroneous assessment practice/s suggested by the comics.
o For me, as I observe the comics properly, it shows the real life situation between the teachers and students. The comics demonstrated the connection or significance between the instructional objective and the evaluation items so that the students could comprehend their subject matter with ease. When a lesson from an exam differs from what they learnt in class, students will undoubtedly become confused.
4. If all teachers apply OBE or OBTL, which will most likely be the assessment results good results and happy learners or poor results and frustrated learners? Explain your answer.
o It is highly likely that students will retain the material covered in a particular class when taking quizzes or exams. If all teachers apply OBE and OBTL it will give a good result towards both the students and teachers especially in their evaluation. Having good result of your students exam and performance would mean that you as teacher is effective and in return they achieved your desired outcome.
5. “Content without purpose is only trivia.” Do you agree? Why or why not?
o “Content without purpose is only trivia”, as a future educator, I believe that teachers should facilitate the learning of the students providing them little or unimportant information is not helpful in adding to their knowledge and learning. In creating content there should always a purpose by doing so, students’ engagement increases significantly as they learn about the relevance of the content and likewise how to use it outside of the classroom. By incorporating purpose it can deepen and enhance the knowledge and can be stored in a long term memory as it connects to different areas.
