Durante la década del 30, el arquitecto ítalo - argentino Francisco Salamone realizó en el interior de la provincia de Bs. As. una serie de obras de tinte modernista en las que confluyen principalmente los estilos Art - Decó, Monumentalismo, y Racionalismo, dando lugar a un estilo propio.
En el partido de Azul, Salamone realizó diversas obras entre las que se destacan principalmente la portada del Cementerio Municipal, la Plaza San Martín, y el ex Matadero Municipal. En el año 2014 estas construcciones fueron declaradas Monumento Histórico Nacional.
