Hacia 1854, en la zona donde hoy se encuentra ubicada la localidad de 16 de Julio, existió el Fortín Otamendi, situado en cercanías de la laguna "La Barrancosa".
Los fortines de la época, ubicados en zonas fronterizas entre los territorios colonizados y aquellos pertenecientes a los pueblos originarios, cumplían la función de custodiar los límites del incipiente Estado Argentino.
El Fortín Otamendi, recibe su nombre en homenaje al comandante del Ejercito Argentino Nicanor Otamendi, quien perdiera la vida junto a más de cien soldados durante el enfrentamiento con las tropas del cacique Yanquetruz, en el denominado "Combate de San Antonio de Iraola", en septiembre de 1855.
Hacia el año1877, familiares de Nicanor Otamendi fundaron la estancia "La Libertad" en las tierras donde se dió el hisórico combate. Posteriormente la zona comenzará a poblarse, al finalizar la denominada "Conquista del desierto" mediante la cual el Estado Argentino, a través del ejercito, doblega a los habitantes originarios de la región.
En el año 1911 culminan los trabajos de construcción de las vías del ferrocarril, y para la construcción de la estación correspondiente a la zona, el señor Eladio Otamendi donará parte de sus tierras. Originariamente se pensó para la estación el nombre de "Estación Otamendi", el que fuera luego reemplazado por "Estación 16 de Julio" en homenaje a la fecha del aniversario de la boda de Eladio Otamendi, realizada un 16 de Julio del año1880.
Around 1854, in the area where the town of 16 de Julio is located today, there was a military fortification, Fuerte Otamendi, located near “La Barrancosa” lagoon.
The fortifications of the time, located in border areas between the colonized territories and those belonging to the native peoples, fulfilled the function of guarding the limits of the incipient Argentine state.
Fuerte Otamendi is named in honor of the Argentine´s army commander Nicanor Otamendi, who lost his life along with more than a hundred soldiers during the confrontation with the troops of the native chief Yanquetruz, in the so-called “Combate de San Antonio de Iraola”, in September 1855.
Around 1877, relatives of Nicanor Otamendi founded “La Libertad” ranch in the lands where the historical combat took place. Later the area began to be populated, at the end of the extermination campaing of native peole campaing so-called “Campaña del desierto” by means of which the Argentine State, through the army, subdued the original inhabitants of the region.
In 1911, the construction of the railroad tracks was completed, and Mr. Eladio Otamendi donated part of his land for the construction of the station corresponding to the area. Originally the station was named “Estación Otamendi”, which was later replaced by “Estación 16 de Julio” in homage to the date of the anniversary of Eladio Otamendi's wedding, which took place on July 16, 1880.
