and airworthy collections
AFB Zwartkop, Valhalla
Date of visit: 2nd December 2017
Unfortunately the museum was partially closed due to major construction works on their drainage systems, however they normally hold a Flying Training Day on the first Saturday of every month when some of the SAAF Historic Flight collection (and other aircraft based at AFB Zwartkop) are flown, plus other static aircraft can be viewed. My visit coincided with the last Training Day of 2017.

Spitfire 5518 arrived in South Africa in 1947 and served in the Cape and at Waterkloof Air Force Base before being decommissioned as a gate guard. Having been restored to flying condition by the SAAF Museum she retook to the skies in 1994 as 5553 'The Spirit of Reutech', but unfortunately sustained severe damage after a crash at an air show at Zwartkop in 2000.
In October 2014 the Pretoria Branch of the Friends of the SAAF Museum were given the go ahead to manage the rebuild project.
