Ashburton has a strong aviation history, being a training base in World War 2. 50 Tiger Moths were based there. The original tarmac and tie-down rings are still present to this day, which helped to secure the aircraft from Mid Canterbury’s strong nor-west winds. Over 30 aircraft are on display in the two museum buildings, with more in the workshop.

The rear fuselage is in storage. ZK-SSS / 56 red (ex- Romanian Air Force 66657) was damaged following an overrun of the North Shore '21' runway back in February 2009.
