Opened on 22nd June 2002, the Forsvars- og Garnisons museum (Defence and Garrison Museum) is a military museum located in Aalborg and exhibits all branches of Danish defence organisations including the Royal Danish Air Force, Royal Danish Army, Home Guard, Police and the Danish Emergency Management Agency covering the period from World War II to present. The museum is located at the former German seaplane base Seefliegerhorst Aalborg, established there in 1940. The aviation exhibits can be found in a seaplane hangar, built by German occupation forces during WWII, and given to the Garrison Historical Society of Aalborg for the creation of a military museum in August 2001. The Danish Navy is, however, represented in the city's separate maritime museum. Exhibitions covering the 3 WWII German airbases in Aalborg and the camps for German refugees after the end of the war are housed in the original command bunker of the seaplane base. Exhibitions also cover Aalborg as a garrison city from 1779.
