79 Aerodrome Road, Blenheim, Marlborough 7272
Date of visit: 28th February 2017
A resurgence of heritage aviation interest in Marlborough was created in the late 1990's when a group of enthusiasts imported two Chinese Nanchang trainers and established the Marlborough Warbirds Association. This attracted an increasing number of other heritage aircraft to be based there, which in turn grabbed the attention of aviation enthusiasts and tourists alike. In 1997, a small group of aircraft owners and enthusiasts got together and formed the New Zealand Aviation Museum Trust (NZAMT) to make these aircraft more accessible to the public on a more practical and sustainable basis, and to grow the public understanding and appreciation of aviation. During the years of planning and fundraising, including the biennial Classic Fighters Omaka Airshow, the group was joined by film director, Sir Peter Jackson. In December 2006, the ‘Knights of the Sky’ exhibition opened presenting one of the world's largest collections of World War I aircraft and rare memorabilia. It includes a mix of static and airworthy aircraft in a series of dioramas.
Their 2nd exhibition ‘Dangerous Skies’ opened on 1st December 2016 featuring aviation from World War II.
With a number of the aircraft being airworthy, exhibits may differ to those seen on this visit
