2003-2004 Islanders Yearbook

Design by W. Averso

Mr. Averso's journey into teaching began long before his formal art education. Spending many hours growing up in his father's tattoo shop, Mr. Averso started his art career by sketching typical tattoo artwork such as dragons, skulls and type.

Eventually, Mr. Averso's passion and interest grew past tattoos, and he realized his gift for advertising while studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. From the Fashion Institute, Mr. Averso graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in Advertising Design, soon landing his first ad job as a typesetter in a large Manhattan ad agency.

Within a few years Mr. Averso was an Art Director working in Manhattan, New York and Frankfurt, Germany on such clients as Citibank, AT&T, and Land Rover.

After commuting into Manhattan for 7 years and living in Park Slope, Brooklyn during the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, Mr. Averso came back to his roots on Long Island landing a lead design job with various ad agencies, and finally the New York Islanders hockey club.

With over 10 years experience in the advertising field, Mr. Averso took his design and professional training to Long Island University, CW Post, to further his education attaining his Master's in Art Education in 2006.

The 2022-2023 school year will be Mr. Averso's 17th year teaching in the Sachem school district, and he is looking forward to sharing all of his 'Real Life' experiences with his students.
