I chose to do my project about Katherine Buckner Avery. I liked that she not only provided healthcare for people who were denied it by the government because of their race or because they couldn’t afford it, but she also gave them things like washing machines instead of keeping her family’s fortune. I admire Katherine's strength and courage to help those in need instead of living a comfortable wealthy life like her family had wanted her to. Katherine Buckner Avery was generous, courageous, kind, helpful, and caring.
Katherine Buckner Avery was a nurse during segregation and the Mississippi River flood of 1927. The people most affected by the flood were mostly poor and or of Color. Katherine made a positive change in the course of history by helping others in need, even though it wasn’t what she was “supposed” to do.
The background of my project is watercolor, and the water is a crocheted fabric.
Learning the story of my Unsung Hero has influenced me to give to others, even if they won't be able to give back.
