As a child, Robert R. Williams watched people suffer from a disease called beriberi while he was living in India. He decided to try and stop it by finding a cure because he hated seeing people suffering. Robert R. Williams's work with the chemistry of vitamins aided many people suffering from malnutrition. After twenty-five years of experimentation, he was able to isolate and determine the chemical structure of vitamin B1, later named thiamine.
Robert R. Williams possessed determination for trying to cure beriberi and not stopping until he found the cure. He showed perseverance and courage because he continued to sacrifice his time to save people and was unsuccessful for a long time. We admire his determination to stick to this project and find the cure that saved many people. Robert showed compassion because he was not the one with the disease, and yet he put in all that time and effort to make a cure. He is a role model because he decided to dedicate himself to helping people and saving lives not for fame but just because he was a good person.
To illustrate Robert’s story we drew a picture of him creating the formula. We drew a world map and colored in all the places that were most affected by beriberi. This relates to the story because he tried to find a cure for the people living in these places.
In this project we learned that just because we haven’t heard about someone that does not mean that they are not important. If you are determined to save someone or a lot of people, you don’t mind spending a lot of time trying to accomplish that. Robert R. William’s story is relevant today because he saved many lives and is a very important part of history. Today, beriberi is rare because of Robert R. William’s discovery.
