I chose Jonathan Daniels because he protested to help the Civil Rights Movement as well as sacrificed his life to save another. What I admire most about him is that he joined the protests because he believed it was right. His character traits are perseverance, courage, and selflessness because he was determined to help accomplish equal rights. Jonathan continued to protest, which shows perseverance, and he sacrificed his life to save his friend, which shows both selflessness and courage.
Jonathan was inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech to join the protests of the Civil Rights Movement. After he was released from jail for being arrested at a protest, a man pointed a gun at an African American woman he was walking with, and Jonathan jumped in front of her, sacrificing his life for her. His heroic actions inspired others to join the protests and encouraged people to stand up for what you believe is right.
My vision for this project was to include different parts of Jonathan's story. My artwork expresses his courage and selfishlessness by portraying him standing in front of the store where he sacrificed his life, because doing that takes both of those traits. My artwork also expresses his perseverance through the protesters because Jonathan continued to protest and didn't give up.
Jonathan’s story will influence me to persevere and not give up on something and to stand up for what I believe. I hope that this artwork will share with others that, even if you won’t benefit from it personally, you should stand for what you believe is right.
