My unsung hero is Gail Halvorsen. I used pencil, markers, printed paper, and colored pencils to draw how brave he was and how he helped little kids during World War II, even though he risked being shot down just to help them get a little treat. I think he was kind, selfless, and positive through his actions.
Gail grew up enviously watching planes soar over his family’s farm in Garland, Utah. He decided that was going to be his dream, and he earned his private pilot’s license through the Civilian Pilot Training Program and joined the Civil Air Patrol. He helped thousands of kids by supporting them through hard times.
In my piece, I expressed how kind and careful Gail was by drawing him with a huge smile on his face. I used a pencil for shading, markers for coloring the plane in the background, and I also used printed pieces of Hershey's candy bars, the exact ones that he dropped into Berlin.
Learning the story of my unsung hero taught me to always put others before myself and be selfless. I hope my art has the same effect on other people.
