I chose Andreé de Jongh for my Unsung Heroes project. I chose her because she chose to save so many people even though it meant she was risking her life. Andreé de Jongh created the Comet Line, which was an escape route to help airmen and soldiers in World War II who were in danger of being captured by the Nazis. She could have let over a hundred people die, but she saved so many people and will hopefully be remembered in history.
Andreé De Jongh was born in Schaerbeek, Belgium under German occupation during the first World War. Andreé de Jongh was selfless because she was willing to almost get killed to save the airmen. Andreé stated, “from here on I will be your little mother, and you will be my little children. It will be my job to get my children to Spain and freedom.”
For my project, I wanted to incorporate Andreé de Jongh’s face and her flag because she helped save people who had crashed their planes and were at risk of being captured. Her background is important because she saw a problem and she risked her life to fix it. Andreé de Jongh’s story shows it is important to care about other people's health and safety. She inspired me to help someone if they are in need and are struggling, and I hope you are inspired to do the same.
