I chose Mary Anning for my Unsung Hero project because she has a very interesting story of how she dealt with the sexist men (and women) in her life. She lost a lot of family members when she was young, and her early life led her to choose paleontology as her career. Her area of expertise is paleontology, and she discovered a lot of amazing things.
Mary Anning contributed to science, and more specifically paleontology, with her discoveries including the first complete skeletons of an ichthyosaur and a plesiosaur. Additionally, she transformed paleontology with her solid evidence of ancient marine life and helped solidify paleontology as a valid field in science.
My creative interpretation of this story shows Mary sitting in a field working. She was preoccupied with her work most of her life, and she never got married. I covered the top of her face with her hat to show how she was oppressed and didn’t have any power because she was a woman.
My artwork expresses her impact because it includes blueprints and images of the fossils she found that changed paleontology. Mary Anning's story showed me that anything can be created and discovered, and these things can be created or discovered by any person on this planet, regardless of color, gender, background, or wealth.
