I chose Chester Nez, because by using the Navajo language to keep codes safe in World War II he saved so many lives. I also chose Chester Nez because he was brave, and I really admire that because it is hard to be brave, especially in war when people are dying all around you. Chester Nez is inspirational because he sacrificed food, water, and sleep, and put his life in danger, all for a country that was stolen from his people and that did not even give him equal rights. I think that it is really impressive that he saved so many American soldiers. He could have easily done nothing to help because of how badly he was treated by the government.
One of Chester Nez’s character traits is courage. Chester is courageous because during the war he used the Navajo language to save lives while people were dying all around him. Some other character traits that I would use to describe Chester are persistent, clever, loyal, adaptable, and compassionate. He was really compassionate because he had to help the American soldiers win the war even though those same soldiers might have been not treating him or his people fairly.
Chester Nez contributed to a positive change in the course of history by helping America win World War II by defeating Japan and the Nazis. He also had an impact on the lives of others such as saving American soldiers so that they could see their families again. My artwork expresses Chester Nez being persistent because it shows him talking in the Navajo language to the other soldiers. I used clay to make Chester Nez. I used the army minifigures as other soldiers so it was not just Chester Nez alone. I used dirt, leaves, and sticks to make a dramatic effect so it looks like bombs are dropping and spreading dirt all around. I crumbled the leaves so that it would look like leaves from trees. I also used sticks in my artwork because it looks like the trees have fallen over.
Chester Nez’s story will influence my actions by making me more helpful like how Chester helped people in the war and with his Navajo language. I will be more courageous when I think about being in Chester’s shoes because of how courageous he was in World War II, when he was trying to survive while seeing all the other soldiers die around him. I hope that when people see my artwork they are inspired by it, and it will make them want to learn more about Chester Nez and what makes him a hero.
