The Tai Chi Step is very complex. If we do not direct our attention to the correct movement, we will damage our knees over time. The step strengthens the muscles around the hips.
It also builds the connection to our kua/hip area.
The kwa folding occurs in every tai chi and qi gong movement.
It is about initiating the movement from the dantien area and focusing on the mechanics in our hips.
