The above is an example of camp layout. This is applicable to science fiction and fantasy, although magic and science may influence the nature of the fortifications

Note that the commanding officer is on the high ground. He also is taking in the footage from the surveillance towers. Trees surround the base’s walls on three sides and the other has walls for cover. The armored turret can shoot through the slit in the walls along with the infantry squads. The warehouses are at the furthest ends from the entrance and at different sides so that they are difficult to loot. Whilst it is not shown, either a radar cloak or anti-air devices must be in play to ensure against air raids, depending on size. In a desert scenario or if the camp clearing lacks tree cover, the camp is most likely built into the ground and the cover is camouflaged. Thermal masking is also helpful in these situations. It is critical that the enemy only has the opportunity to appear at one front, or face the prospect of high walls and alerts to the army within. Electrified walls or similar protections work best for this task. It would be a good idea for sniper towers to appear between the warehouses and the commanding officer on the high ground. Alternatively or in conjunction, this is also the best placement for the anti-air turrets. Behind the warehouses and the commanding officer would be the mess hall, barracks, infirmary, and other essentials. If the camp has air capabilities, this is the likely site of them. For the purpose of fending off artillery, landmines and barbed wire around the encampment would serve best. Also note the firing range and aim of each unit. All units should be aiming at the opening slit in the cover to get in. Armored units and flamethrowers should be in the front, with riflemen on higher ground with machine guns and medics. The diagram above cannot express this in great detail, but assume that the marines represent squads of infantry and artillery. Also, note, sandbags are under no circumstance realistic walls! Metal scrap is ideal.
