I’ll be honest, this piece was hard for me to respond to. I did enjoy it, and the Art+Com website was really interesting to look through, I think my brain is just fried.
I feel like meta-media is such an apparent concept, but I honestly hadn’t thought of it this way before. This essay describes meta-media as an addition of properties- not changing the media but adding new ways to manipulate and view the structure. This process does allow for art to be changed, but primarily it brings a new understanding to the art. Lev Manovich describes two concepts in modern media; the mix of media across times(architecture), and the diffusion of culture with globalization. The software and tools we use for media editing can be viewed as the best of both worlds, “the remix of culture and computers”.
I think the blending of cultures has been around since the beginnings of art. It’s always been used as a way to share stories, information and feelings, so it makes sense that parts of a culture or people would travel. I also think that there’s a very strong Americanization that filters a lot of media through our fairly self-centered perspective. I noticed plot patterns in the shows my parents watch- typically Korean(mom) and Turkish(dad)- that I have a hard time predicting the way I do American shows. Fandoms and social media trends tend to lean toward American practices and norms. Now technology is becoming more universal, with less variety in design and functions. Online places especially are becoming a monopoly, with very few sites that are for specific demographics, and even less that are purely for minors.
Art+Com sounds awesome, I love when art is made into a physical presence. I wonder if the technology they use to map the stage backgrounds of the theatre is similar to the software used in interactive VR games at fast foods/arcades?
