Soccer safety: MCL tear prevention


According to Alexander Sabadash, there are a lot of soccer players, both professional and amateur, who suffer from medial collateral ligament or MCL tear. The MCL is one of the two ligaments, along with anterior cruciate ligament or ACL, that is most prone to injury.


The MCL can be found on the inner side of the knee joint, connecting the thigh and shin bones. And while they are vulnerable to tearing, Alexander Sabadash mentions that soccer players can reduce the risk of the injury. He lists some of the ways below.


Always practice proper technique on the pitch, even in practice.


With proper technique when kicking, running, and tackling, soccer players reduce the risk of an MCL tear. Add to that correct stretching and exercises to strengthen the area, and the knees will be relatively safer.


Do not overwork the knee.


Overworking a body part increases the chances of injury, which is why Alexander Sabadash urges people to rest when they feel tired or when a body part feels worn down.


Wear proper gear.


Wearing the proper gear is as important as anything else, especially if the gear has safety features. For soccer players, cleats are very important to keep them from slipping and sliding
