Interesting facts about the Russian Premier League

It's no secret just how big a fan of the Russian Premier League Alexander Sabadash has become throughout the years. And today, he shows it by listing down a few fascinating facts about his favorite league.

  • The RPL is widely considered the 6th best league in Europe, and that's quite an achievement if you consider the top five – Spain, Germany, England, Italy, and France.

  • Because the RPL returned to the standard European model of a season, the transition caused the league to hold a 15-month season, from March 2011 to May 2012. This was one of the longest seasons of football history.

  • Sadly, Alexander Sabadash mentions that football isn't as popular in Russia. The RPL only ranks 19 in attendance in the world's football leagues, with a little over 11,400 people attending the matches before the pandemic struck.

  • Every pro league has its legends, athletes who stand head and shoulders above the rest of the competition. For the RPL, it's Oleg Veretennikov. The immensely talented midfielder played in 273 games in the '90s and scored 143 goals. That's a staggering .52 goals per game.
