Autobiographical Manuscript, Nathan Cole, 1740

H: This passage was written when the Great Awakening was occuring in the colonies. This religious revival caused many colonists to feel different in their hearts and inspire them to think for themselves. This event discouraged the strong authority the church had and promoted an individual spiritual experience.

A: This seemed to be addressing to people who are yet to experience the Great awakening. He was writing to people that are curious about what it felt like. In the excerpt, it seemed as if Nathan Cole was talking about his experiences and how it has affected him.

P: Nathon Cole was a man positively influced by the Great Awakening; he was empowered by the preachings of George Whitefield. He says that Mr.Whitefield looked almsot angelic. All the statements he made about Mr.Whitefield were positive supporting statements.

P: The purpose of this document was to feel spiritual. Since many have not had experienced the Great Awakening, he talks about his experience, and what happened. He writes the empowering experiences that he felt and wanted the audience to experience the same effects the Great Awakening had on him.
