For over fifteen years, the 4-H STEM Challenge has stood as a cornerstone of national youth science education, uniting young minds, dedicated volunteers, and educators in exciting hands-on STEM exploration. This flagship program, which began as the National Youth Science Day (NYSD), continues to inspire scientific curiosity and innovation across the country.
The 2024 STEM Challenge, "Food for Thought," brings a fresh focus to food security and community impact. Developed through collaboration between leading universities' 4-H educators, this year's program features engaging activities like "Food Fighters," a board game teaching global food supply chain concepts, "Chew on This," an entrepreneurial challenge addressing food waste, and "Know to Grow," which explores controlled environment agriculture through hands-on engineering.
The program's legacy includes notable past challenges such as Power Protectors (2023), which tackled energy issues, Explorers of the Deep (2022), focusing on ocean exploration and robotics, Galactic Quest (2021), exploring space science, and Mars Base Camp (2020), which engaged youth in space mission planning. Each year's challenge demonstrates 4-H's commitment to making STEM education accessible, engaging, and relevant to real-world issues.
