What Is Apprenticeship?

PRAY:

Have someone read 1 Peter 4:8 aloud. After you read it, spend a minute or two silently reflecting on the passage. Then spend some time praying as a group for anything that 1 Peter 4:8 draws to your mind or stirs up in your heart.

ONE ANOTHERING:

Try to think of some practical needs you can share to give others the opportunity to step up and love you. It's okay if it takes some time to get comfortable with this. It takes time and practice to be vulnerable with one another... but amazing things happen when we are. Remember that the Benevolence Ministry is a resource for our comGroups.

  • How can we love or serve one another this week?

READ:

2 Peter 1:1-11

SHARE:

  • What comes to mind when you think of a disciple of Jesus today? How about an apprentice of Jesus? Does the word apprentice reshape what it means for you to follow Jesus?
  • Have you had any experiences with spiritual disciplines (practices of grace)? Was your experience positive or negative? What excites you about the practices of grace? What makes you nervous or hesitant?
  • Pastor Heath defined apprenticeship as union (a committed, intimate relationship) and abiding (being with the master and doing what he says). How would you put union and abiding in your own words?
  • Pastor Heath defined abiding as being with the master and doing what he says. What have your experiences of simply being with Jesus looked like? Are you drawn more to the relational (being with Jesus) or action-oriented (doing what he says)? Why are both important?
  • Read 2 Peter 1:11. Allow time for observations. What emotions and desires does this passage stir up in you?
  • If you’re comfortable sharing, where do you feel stuck right now? Do you believe it is possible for you to change? How can our comGroup come alongside you in that process of change?

PRACTICE: MEDITATION

Have someone read one of the passages below aloud. Spend ten minutes silently meditating on this truth: “Jesus dwells within me. This changes everything.” Begin by breathing deeply in God’s presence and giving him access to your thoughts and feelings. Enjoy being silent in God’s presence and don’t judge yourself if your mind begins to wander. Focus on returning to this phrase: “Jesus dwells within me. This changes everything.”

Afterward, talk together about what that experience was like. Encourage your group to set aside 5 or 10 minutes every day this week to spend meditating on this truth. Talk through what challenges will come with that, what benefits may come. Come together next week and share what the week was like.
