Teaching Philosophy

"A jeweller holds a piece of carbon, sees the diamond jewel that it can become, and dedicates herself to its transformation. Encasing the rough stone in cement, she studies its structure and delivers the cutting blows with precision to effect a clean cleavage. As a teacher, I hold both the learner and the material firmly but gently, and with pedagogical and technical precision, deliver activities that bring all the elements together in an active intra- and interpersonal engagement with the learning material--to effect meaningful learning. A diamond to cut other diamonds, I am aware of the responsibility to stay sharp, knowing that my cleaving and polishing can result in a beautiful jewel, or in graphite dust. I continue the dialectic between know-why and know-how in order to achieve the three-fold transformation of self, learner and society."
