AEROSPACE COMPOSITE MATERIALS LAB
Contents :
The mini-course offers an opportunity for students to work with the experimental facilities of the Aerospace Composite Materials Laboratory of DIMA. The aim of the course is to approach to the manufacturing of structural components on the base of designs that encompass a combination of different materials. These multi-material structures include continuous fiber reinforced laminates, textile laminates, textile composites for high temperature applications, layered materials, sandwich structures with a variety of cores (honeycombs, foams, etc.), and nanoparticle reinforced polymers. Focus on the autoclave process and on the non-destructive technique for analysis and recognition of defects, performed through an ultrasonic phased-array device.
Topics :
• Short introduction to composite materials for aerospace field
• Outline of production techniques
• Vacuum bagging technique
• the autoclave and the curing cycle
• Manufacturing of composite panels laminated with prepreg technique and hand lay -up
• Production of sandwich panels
• Outline of ultrasonic techniques for nondestructive testing
• Experience of recognition of defects by ultrasonic device
Facilities:
• Autoclave for vacuum bagging curing technique
• Olympus Omniscan MX2 Ultrasonic device with phased array probe 64 linear elements
• Milling machine for post-treatment of manufactured components
