Ok - so let's start with the basics here.
It's real easy to get "lost" in the jargon and technicalities of what AI is capable of - and what we should, and should not, use it for. The University has some guidlines and requirements (links are in the Sensitive Data section at right) - please REVIEW THESE before proceeding with any AI-like usage.
Ars Technica has a good article from July 2023 - that is helpful to explain how AI models work.
One thing we want to point out - is that if you dive into this technology you will hear "ChatGPT" mentioned in a lot of articles and videos. Here, at U-M - you should NOT be using ChatGPT with Instutional Data. Our restrictions on data usage prevent this. There are also limitations on what kind of data you should be using with U-M GPT (which is the University's version of ChatGPT).

U-M approved AI tools should only be used with institutional data classified as LOW unless the safecompute.umich.edu site says otherwise
Other AI tools Should NOT be used with sensitive data, IT systems, etc.
