The works I have created this quarter show my development in figure drawing skills, focusing on proportion, composition, and narrative. Before this course, I have been avoiding drawing figures. I felt like it was a category of art where the skills of an artist really show, and I was afraid of that. However, practicing figure drawings in this class and seeing visible improvement in my skills has given me more confidence.
These are the first gesture drawings I did for this class. I quickly added strokes to try and emulate the figures popping up on the screen. I lacked confidence in my lines and tried to make up for it by adding more to get to the right shape.
The figure on the bottom left is one I did after receiving critiques on my first gesture drawings. I was able to improve in terms of flow and more solid lines, but still lacked accuracy and dimension.
I worked on getting the proportions right and cleaning up my gesture drawings. I started adding shading to some of my figure drawings for volume. I also made attempts to alter the figure from what I see in the reference photo to fit the story and character I wanted to create.
This is a looping animation I made on procreate based off of a figure drawing I did. I was going for a sensual feel for the original drawing, but the added movement of the legs swaying back and forth creates a more playful mood.
