There is beauty in the process of unraveling, untangling, creating and reworking. I see overwhelming detail in every part of my daily routine. Through my developing art practice, I’ve found significance in the elements of my surroundings and the space in between. I see art as a bridge. Mediums of art are agents of transference from abstract experience to interactive space. A perspective that is influential enough to change the structure of my surroundings.
My studies of drawing and painting from life have taught me to seek answers to the specific questions necessary to translate the dimensional world to flat paper or digital screen. What angle am I looking at? Where is this shape in relation to that? Simple strings of questioning give me time to sit with my surroundings and interpret them in new ways. A practice that has become intertwined seamlessly with the rest of my life.
In this class I learned to develop a more imaginative side of life drawing. Digital mediums helped me in this a lot, because I could explore my thoughts beyond what would be possible in the physical world.
When I began this course, I was a beginner to using digital tools for fine arts drawing. It was difficult at first to get a feel for using a tablet and stylus as opposed to a physical piece of paper and charcoal. Throughout the course I went back and forth between digital and traditional drawing mediums. Striking a balance between the two was helpful to me in adapting my skills with digital tools and creating a cohesive style. I began by working very loose and gesturally in order to get a feel for the new medium.
Over the last 10 weeks I have learned to embrace to versatility of digital mediums. They can be transformed and morphed in so many ways, one piece of artwork can become many different ones all at once. It has really opened my eyes to new possibilities and has inspired me to think bigger when I am coming up with concepts for drawings. By the end of the term I felt that I had a good grasp on how to capture figures in motion and movement with various styles and mediums. This has helped me to understand how characters interact with their environment.
These are two rotoscoped animations in which i used life drawing skills learned in this class to portray a figure moving across the screen.
Seeing my drawings come to life this way gave me a different perspective on the sort of snapshot that is a life drawing or still life.
These animation videos gave me a good sense of how the body moves at such a fast pace. Taking time to notice each frame showed me exactly what poses make up a fluid movement.
Working on collaborative pieces with my classmates helped me to be more imaginative with different concepts. It was an inspiring challenge to work with what was already there and develop on it further, and to see my work in contexts that I would not have thought of on my own.
