Recruitment Process

How long does the recruitment process take?

    • The recruitment process varies by position but typically takes 2-4 weeks for staff roles and 4-6 weeks for faculty positions from application to offer. Consider an additional 2 weeks for requisition approval.


What does the onboarding process look like? How am I introduced to the system and my coworkers or team?

    • This stage streamlines the new hire’s integration by finalizing the completion of essential paperwork, training, and orientation to ensure a smooth transition into their new role.


How long should I expect to wait to receive feedback after an interview?

    • You can usually expect feedback within 1-2 weeks after your interview, depending on the position.


Can I apply for multiple positions at once?

    • Yes, you can apply for multiple positions, but ensure that each application is tailored to the specific role.


What are the pre-employment requirements?

    • Pre-employment requirements generally include a background check, verification of employment and education, drug screening, and, for certain positions, skills tests or certification verification.


When does a hiring manager need to take action with a candidate on a job requisition?

    • The process begins with an intake meeting where the recruiter, HRBP, and hiring manager outline expectations for the hiring pool. Ideally, resume reviews are completed within 1-3 business days following the meeting.


What can I expect during my first week on the job, and what kind of communication should I anticipate from my manager?

    • Your manager will contact you a week before your first day to communicate your schedule and first week expectations.During your first week, expect introductions, onboarding tasks, and initial job training. 


Define the terms for adjunct instructor, part-time employee, workforce trainer, and dual enrollment. How are these positions typically hired?

    • Adjunct Instructor: A part-time educator, often hired on a per-semester basis. Paid monthly on a per contact hour, with the total divided into equal monthly installments for the semester. Course assignments depend on enrollment and may not extend beyond the current semester.

    • Part-Time Employee: Works less than 29 hours per week; hired through standard job postings.

    • Workforce Trainer: Provides training for specific skills; usually hired based on expertise.

    • Dual Enrollment: A program where high school students take college courses. Instructors are often hired through partnerships with school districts.


Who is involved in the approval process for job requisitions, and how long does it typically take?

    • Workday follows a set approval process that can take up to 2 weeks for final approval. 

Faculty-Specific Questions

Do faculty positions offer tenure?

      • No, tenure is not offered.


What is the duration of faculty contracts, and how is their performance evaluated?

      • TSTC offers 9- and 12-month faculty contracts, with performance evaluated annually.  For detailed information, contact your manager.  


Do faculty have the ability to modify and control the curriculum content?

      • Faculty do not have the ability to modify curriculum content. The Director of Alignment can make changes that align with institutional guidelines and accreditation standards.


How is the teaching load decided for faculty?

      • The teaching load is determined by the department, based on institutional needs, the faculty member’s expertise, and student enrollment.


Who is responsible for faculty credentialing, and how long does the process take?

      • The Faculty Credentialing Office collaborates with the Director of Alignment to verify that qualifications of these faculty meet the standards set forth in TSTC policy and by The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, which typically takes 2-4 weeks.


What diversity and inclusion initiatives does the college support?

      • In 2023, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 17, which prohibits public colleges and universities from maintaining Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) offices or requiring DEI statements during the hiring process. This legislation focuses on merit-based decisions.


How does the college evaluate teaching experience for faculty applicants?

      • Teaching experience is assessed based on relevant work experience, demonstrated mentoring/teaching effectiveness, and relevant certifications or academic credentials.


Which faculty roles are entitled to a faculty retention bonus?

How are Adjunct instructors paid, and how is their compensation calculated?

      • Your pay will be calculated based on the number of contact hours you have been assigned to teach per semester. The total will be divided into equal installments over the semester. Course assignments depend on enrollment and may not extend beyond the current semester.


What is a dual credit instructor, and how is their role different? Does the hiring process differ?

      • A dual credit instructor at Texas State Technical College (TSTC) teaches high school students courses that count for both high school and college credit. These instructors typically partner with local high schools to deliver college-level courses, allowing students to earn credits that can be applied toward their high school diploma and a college degree or certification at the same time.


What kind of training is provided for new faculty members, and how long is the training period?

      • Faculty training includes a four-day orientation, followed by shadowing experienced instructors.

Job Advancement and Career Opportunities

Are there opportunities for advancement within the college for faculty and staff?

        • Yes, there are opportunities for both faculty and staff to advance into leadership roles or other positions within the college.


When can a new hire apply for another role within the organization, and what are the potential career advancement opportunities?

        • New hires can apply for other roles after 1 year in their current role.  They must be in good performance standing at the time of the transfer request.


Will a staff member be eligible to teach an Adjunct Position outside of work hours?

        • Yes, staff members can teach adjunct courses at TSTC outside of their regular work hours, as long as it doesn’t interfere with their primary job or create a conflict of interest. If the adjunct position is outside TSTC, approval from the Conflict of Interest (COI) panel is required.


What training and development opportunities are available for faculty?

      • Training and development opportunities are available from our Learning & Organizational Development team.

Internal Processes

How soon can I apply to a new role within the company and do I have to inform my manager?

  • 90 days. While it’s not mandatory to let your manager know, we encourage you to discuss it with them, as they can provide valuable insights and support for your career journey. This conversation will not pause the application process, as TSTC is committed to helping you grow and develop at every stage.


What happens after I submit my application for a staff position?

        • Your application will go through an initial screening by Talent Acquisition to ensure it meets the minimum qualifications. If it does, it will be forwarded to the hiring manager for further review. You will be notified if you move forward in the process.


Where can I view job postings and apply for positions?

        • You can view and apply for internal job postings via the Workday portal, which lists current openings for staff positions within TSTC.


Does TSTC offer temporary positions?

        • Yes, TSTC offers both temporary and full-time positions. These are also listed in the internal job portal on Workday.


What application documents will I need before I apply?

        • Typically, you will need an updated resume, a cover letter, and possibly references. The specific job posting may list any additional required documents.


Can I apply directly to the hiring department?

        • No, all applications must go through Workday to ensure consistency in the hiring process and compliance with TSTC policies.


Do I need to create a new application for each job posting?

        • While your basic profile information is saved in Workday, you will need to submit an application for each individual job posting. You can reuse previous documents like resumes, but tailor your application materials to the specific role.


If I don’t finish my application, can I save it and complete it later?

        • Yes, Workday allows you to save your application in progress and return to complete it at a later time.


Can I withdraw my application after submitting it?

        • Yes, you can withdraw your application in Workday at any point before the position is filled.


What does it mean if I receive a message stating I "have not met the minimum qualifications or eligibility requirements"?

        • This means that based on the information in your application, you do not meet the required qualifications for the position, and you will not move forward in the hiring process.


Does TSTC conduct criminal history and background checks?

        • Yes, TSTC conducts criminal history and background checks for all candidates who are offered employment. The checks are completed before the final hiring decision is made.


What does it mean when a job posting states that the selected applicant must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License and undergo a driving record check?

        • For certain positions requiring driving as part of the job, a valid Texas Driver’s License and a clean driving record are mandatory. The driving record check is conducted to ensure eligibility for these roles.


Can I work a second job if I am already employed at TSTC or with the State of Texas?

        • Yes, but you must first seek approval from your department head. Ensure there is no conflict of interest and that the second job does not interfere with your duties at TSTC or is a conflict of interest.


Where can I find information on legal issues such as dual employment, employment eligibility, equal employment opportunities, and campus carry?

        • These policies can be found on TSTC's internal HR portal, or you can contact the HR department directly for specific questions.


What is Selective Service Registration, and why is it required before working at TSTC?

        • Selective Service Registration is a legal requirement for all male U.S. citizens and immigrants between the ages of 18 and 25. Compliance is mandatory for employment at any state agency, including TSTC.
