“Mens sana in corpore nano”
A healthy mind in a healthy body.
- Roman poet, Juvenal
The PE Department believes in developing Tampinesians holistically through a wide array of programmes, aligned to the school's shared values.
The PE curriculum is delivered through the “Teaching Games for Understanding (TGFU) approach. This inquiry approach, developed by researchers at Loughborough University, taps on our students' inherent desire to play. Hence, they learn games through play!
KEY PROGRAMMES
PRINCIPLES OF GAMES (POG)
POG is based on the concept of the TGFU approach. Through the playing of games, our students learn games principles under 3 categories -
Net/Barrier,
Striking/Fielding and
Invasion/Territorial.
The games are broken down into key ideas and our students are able to play even with a beginner’s ability. With guidance, students gain greater understanding of the games and improve their game performance with appropriate skill improvement. This makes game playing more enjoyable for students, as well as teaching students to be effective decision-makers in games.
EXPERIENTIAL CAMPS
The PE Department organises cohort camps for the students. The objectives for cohort camps are to
nurture school values of integrity, courage, adaptability, respect and excellence,
acquire skills in orienteering and outdoor living, and
develop their social-emotional competencies for effective peer leadership and team-building.
Camps are a liberating way for students to interact with the natural world while learning a range of life skills. Students get to experience positive interactions with each other through fun activities and team challenges, as well as get healthier through physical activities such as hiking and canoeing. These experiences help to shape our students into well-rounded young adults.
MOE - OBS CHALLENGE
The MOE-OBS Challenge was introduced with these objectives in mind
Develop well-rounded individuals.
Provide rich learning experiences outside the classroom to build up students' resilience and ruggedness.
Develop students' 21st century competencies as well as competencies for sustainable, active and healthy living.
