Character And Citizenship Education (CCE)

Character is, in the long run, the decisive factor in the life of individuals and of nations alike.

- Theodore Roosevelt

TPSS believes in nurturing Tampinesians with values and character for the betterment of the society. We seek to inculcate in our students sound moral values and equip them with the essential skills and knowledge to succeed in life.

We teach values by engaging the minds of our students and developing their empathy to bring about changes in their behaviour. We believe that when our students clarify and demonstrate values, they will understand universal values which uphold social order and harmony.

Building an Inclusive Society

Our vision for Character and Citizen Education (CCE) is to develop student leaders who are socially conscious and advocate for social cohesion in Singapore.

Using our unique ACE approach (Authentic, Collaborative and Experiential), we want to develop in our students the desired values, socio-emotional competencies and citizenship dispositions to

  • take pride in our national identity, have a sense of belonging to Singapore and be committed to nation-building,

  • value Singapore's socio-cultural diversity, and promote social cohesion and harmony, and

  • care for others and contribute actively to the progress of our community and nation.

Minister Ong & Tampinesians Deliberating over Racial Harmony Issues

Our teachers created unique materials such as conversation cards and board games to engage our students in discussion on national issues.

Former Education Minister Ong Ye Kung and media visited us on 16 July 2020 to observe our lessons.

In a class that they observed, a given scenario was someone being surprised that a Malay student does well in mathematics, and complimenting the student that "You're actually really smart for a Malay."

Our students deliberated and said that it gave the impression of being a backhanded insult with improper tone and hurtful phrasing, as it could be read as being sarcastic. They discussed how they would respond to the person, letting them know that it could be offensive.

The traditional Chapteh which revealed our stereotypical assumptions.

Game to Appreciate Singapore's Cultural Diversity

In another class, Minister Ong and our students played a Racial Harmony game with questions such as which ethnic group the game, chapteh - played with a weighted shuttlecock, is associated with.

Several students answered "Malay", with one student explaining that "the word sounded Malay". The teacher later revealed that the game has its origins in China, thus highlighting to students the importance of not making assumptions.

Knowing that our students now have very different view of race and religion, it is important for us to have these conversations to help students reflect on the role they play in building a cohesive Singapore.

ECO-Stewardship in TPSS

Our CCE vision is also to develop student leaders who advocate our environment and play an active role in our national Go Green movement.

ECO-EDUCATION

Our Environmental Education includes both explicit teaching of content of current environmental issues as well as activities to instill in our students a green DNA. Our Green Ambassadors also share green initiatives and threats such as E-Waste during lessons.

Through the ‘Recycling Plastic Bottle Drive’, ‘E-Waste Drive' and social media competitions such ‘Snap.Green.Post’ and ‘Catch Em’ Right’, our students take action to keep the school and Singapore clean and green.
