Each year, to commemorate Remembrance Day, Woburn organizes a Remembrance Day Assembly. In years past, we have been honoured by the involvement of many community members, including Canadian soldiers back from different tours to share their stories and memories. The Grade 11/12 dance class has been exploring the plight of soldiers returning from war and trying to integrate back into a society that doesn't always know how to accept them. So here they are in, "Coming Home"

This year, the grade 11/12 dance class took on a challenging choreography to the well-known song "Same Love". Within this dance, they question, through the medium of movement, the stigma placed on those people who have chosen an alternative lifestyle by the society around them and express their desire to stand up and support their peers, friends and fellow Canadians as they embrace their sexual preference openly, without criticism or judgement.
This piece, inspired Ms. G., our resident York University Teacher Candidate, to create the "Same Love" Project at York, a forum that addressed the inequalities in our society towards our homosexual members, and invited our grade 11/12 dance class to participate and perform there!
It was a unique opportunity to spend the day on York University campus and explore the life of a university student, see some University level dance classes (and even be involved to join one!) and get a first-hand view of what life in university residence looks like, before we headed off to our performance venue - an unusual space the students had never encountered before. With a performance space that was nothing like our rectangular stage at school and carpeted to boot, the students had to rise to the challenge fo modifying their choreography and performance style to match their surroundings and did a fabulous job!
