Remembrance Day Assembly

November 11, 2011

Each year, to commemorate Remembrance Day, Woburn organizes a Remembrance Day Assembly. In years past, we have been honoured by the involvement of many community members, including Canadian soldiers back from different tours to share their stories and memories. The Grade 12 piece for Remembrance Day 2011 was a lyrical dance, looking at what it would be like for a soldier to have a second chance to consider his/her enlistment - thus the dance begins with the slaughter of a troop of soldiers and works in reverse through training, back to when s/he left home with bags packed right to the moment when s/he decided to enlist in the first place.

Charity Week Assembly

November 24, 2011

Each year, Woburn Student Council organize a Charity Week, where the whole school is involved in raising money for a chosen charity. Each year, Charity week is kicked off with an assembly introducing the topic and sharing with the student body what charity will be our focus for the year. For this piece, the Performance class explored the concept of lending a helping hand and how that can help people in a vast number of different difficult situations

Dare 2 Dance

December 5, 2011

Our school-wide winners were a group of 5 break dancing boys who called themselves New Dimensionz. For their social justice theme, these boys took on the emotionally charged topic of abuse - alcohol abuse by a parent and the abuse he then forces upon his son, who is left to struggle with the difficult decision of what to afterwards to survive.

After a hard competition against 12 other schools, judged by Tre Armstrong, from So You Think You Can Dance Canada, Allen Kaeja, Co-founder and Co-Director of the internationally reknowned Kaeja D’Dance, and Debbie Nicholls-Skerrit, Dancer with COBA and Artist Educator with the TDSB, the competition was fierce with groups competing in every style from contemporary to urban, New DimensionZ prevailed, and were runners’ up, earning the award for Strong Ensemble Performance.

Holiday Assembly

December 23, 2012

Each year, the Woburn Equity Committee puts together a multicultural holiday assembly, celebrating the many diverse cultures and holidays celebrated at WCI. This performance featured many of our fabulous groups at Woburn - including New Dimensionz in "Death's Call", Tempest, Dreamz and a feature solo by LJ!

New Dimensionz: One of our new groups, premiered last year, New Dimensionz entered themselves into the 2011 TDSB Dare 2 Dance competition, placing 2nd overall in the Finals. To audition for Dare 2 Dance, each dance group must portray a social justice theme of their choosing and they are judged not only on their technique but also for how well they portray their theme through the medium of dance. For their social justice theme, these boys took on the emotionally charged topic of abuse - alcohol abuse by a parent and the abuse he then forces upon his son, who is left to struggle with the difficult decision of what to afterwards to survive.
